  • Principal Engineer for Front-end & Accessibility

    Family & Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI), Maryland Department of Labor

    Mar 2024 – present

    Third hire to the Digital Service team building out a greenfield application to support Maryland workers and employers in the rollout of paid family and medical leave for the state. 🆕 Still early days here, so the accomplishments below are a WIP.

    • Developed the hiring process for key roles on the team and served as hiring manger for 5 of the team's early hires

    • Refined how the engineering team supported customer support requests, including improvements to our cross-functional communication and tools
    • Strateged on zone-wide plans and collaborated on change management for those plans
    • Updated the promotion process for all engineers and led the biannual review process
    • Coached mainly senior engineers via 1x1s, including facilitating promotions for 4 engineers over 3 quarters

    Culture

    • Rebooted a dormant affinity group for women, gender-nonconforming and nonbinary employees, providing a point of connection and support for team members

    • Responsible for growing front-end team from 2 to 4, including developing hiring and onboarding processes that were then adopted by entire engineering team

    • Collaborating closely with product managers, developers and designer to scope and estimate work to achieve our product roadmap

    • Led A-B testing of lead-generation forms to increase engagement and conversion. Lead funnel conversion increased from ~5% to more than 10% through improvements to copy, design and mobile layout.
    • Responsible for front-end development of our brand sites (car.show and usedca.rs), online automotive shopping tools (for brands such as Time, AutoGuide, CNET and Kmart) and data-driven dashboards for our clients
    • Created brand style guide and built component-based Sass stylesheets to make development more efficient
    • Prepared site wireframes and prototypes to improve internal discussions and planning about site features and organization

  • National Women In Tech Nonprofit

    Baltimore chapter leader and teacher from 2013–2017. Organized and presented hands-on workshops for women to learn web and software development. Coordinated teachers and volunteer teaching assistants across a wide variety of tech subjects. Built relationships with local companies and nonprofits who can provide space for our classes or other sponsorship opportunities. At the time I stepped down, the chapter had 1500+ members and had hosted 60+ events.
